the accent video blog.

Alright, I’ve seen the accent video blog being done by some of my favorite bloggers and knew I had to get in on the action.

Accents are huge point of contention in my family. I married a Canadian and grew up “as far South as you can get and still be a Yankee,” as my Dad says. I think accents and regional terminology are SO fascinating.

A little bit of background: I was born in Louisville, Kentucky but grew up in extreme Southern Indiana. Growing up, I was always told I had no accent, but then I moved away to go to college at a huge university and was constantly mocked for my Southern accent. Now I live in central Indiana, where we have a big ole melting pot of geographics. Over the years, my Southern accent has pretty much melted away and I’d say I’m very neutral now.

Want to follow along or play yourself? Here are the words and questions.

  • What is the bug that when you touch it, it curls into a ball?
  • What is the bubbly carbonated drink called?

  • What is the thing you change the TV channel with?

P.S. I have no idea why the video looks like I’m sitting a dreamy, fairyland fog bank.

I have never heard anyone say sun shower…I would just say it’s raining lol. There would be some differences between you and me maybe because I am in Oklahoma and a little further south? I hope you have a great day and I am glad to see you still have electric!

    haha that was cute! :)
My mom and I really try to say “cart or shopping cart” instead of buggy.
I grew up in south Georgia but somehow came out of it without a drawl…haha
I still caught the weird words like “buggy”.

I love it! You sound like me, lol. Although I say POP and grandma and grandpa. And just because I’m from MN I don’t sound like Steve Buschemi in Fargo – yaaahh suuuuure ya betchyaaaa. ๐Ÿ˜› My BFF is from NJ and she thinks I taawwwk funny. I think she taawwwks funny. Constant debate between us. LOL

Yeah, you gotta get Craig to make a video.

Remember, I watched the Red Green Show for six months before I met him so I could speak and understand Canadian.

    Great video.

I told him he has to do it, but the really Canadian-y words aren’t on that list.

We’d have to add: cozy, sorry, about, pasta, drama, etc. on there. Plus, we’d have to add questions like, “What do you call the device that you plug multiple electronic devices into?” and “What do you call the large truck that carries trailers of goods on the interstate?” and “What do you call a winter hat?” and “What do you call the small tart, pastel candies that come stacked and wrapped in clear cellophane wrapping with red trim?”

oh my goodness, you are so adorable! I just heart you, spark friend! :)

I unfortunately have a chicahhhhgo accent, bahaha. My whole family calls sausage sahhhsage. And it’s POP! How cute that you call it “coke.” :) love it!

Haha, the Chicago accent makes me giggle! Most of my college friends are from The Region so I hear a lot of “exAAAAAHHctly” and “Ooooh mah gaaassh!”

  6. says

What you call your grandparents is pretty adorable. I called my maternal grandparents Nana and Bampa — ‘Nana’ isn’t too unheard of, but ‘Bampa’ was what I could say when I was a baby, so it stuck… ๐Ÿ˜‰

    Dear Cassie,

sorry for leaving so many comments on one day. I don’t want to spam but this video cleared up my Louisville-Confusion ๐Ÿ˜‰

No more comments today! I promise ๐Ÿ˜‰

PS: I think you look and sound really nice!
