We all know that being active is good for us. But did you know that itโ€™s not just the movement that makes your body happy? Just the simple act of sweating is wonderful for you! Sweating is one of the bodyโ€™s natural detoxification pathways.

While our liver and kidneys do most of the heavy lifting when it comes to detoxification, sweat also helps get out all the stuff that shouldnโ€™t be kicking around in our body. This is why I recommend people skip antiperspirants and instead stick to just deodorantโ€”sweat is good, kids! For generations, cultures across the globe have used saunas, sweat lodges, and steam baths to help keep them healthyโ€”and you should, too!

But when you are sweating, toxins arenโ€™t the only things escaping your poresโ€“water and electrolytes are too, and they are two things your body needs to keep on keepinโ€™ on. So whatโ€™s the solution? Well, if youโ€™re a professional athlete, youโ€™ll probably pound back a cup filled with artificially-colored, artificially-flavored sports drink from an orange cooler.

But I am not a professional athlete, and I would honestly much prefer to restock my body using all-natural goodies. So I make my own electrolyte drink at home using ingredients I always have in stock!

The one speciality item youโ€™ll see in the list below is liquid trace minerals drops. These are absolutely not necessary to making the drink, but they are something that I think are handy to have aroundโ€”especially if you filter your water. By filtering your water (which I highly recommend if you are on city waterโ€”this is the filter we use), you remove a lot of the beneficial minerals that our bodies need to function. A few drops of the liquid trace minerals help to replenish those minerals. Donโ€™t have it or donโ€™t want to buy the trace minerals? No problem. The sea salt in the recipe goes a long way to helping your body recover!

This recipe mixes up to make one quart, and it is so incredibly tasty. It just absolutely hits the spot after a good workout (especially if it happens to be hot outside). I use a wide-mouth quart Mason jar when I make up my batch, but if you need something less prone to breaking (say you want to carry this with you on a long run), any water bottle will work! Enjoy.

  1. This is so good!! Better than actual Gatorade without all the bad stuff! I made with four tablespoons of lime juice because I didnโ€™t have lemon juice.
