It is really hard to mess up a burger. I mean, seriously, when is the last time you had a bad burger? Sure, there are plain burgers or dry burgers or fatty burgers, but really does that ever stop you from eating and enjoying it?
It doesn’t me.
Around this time last year, I was visiting my Canadian in-laws (and spending hours counting how many times “eh” was said in a single conversation) and dinner time came. We had drunk our fair share of Moosehead and were all starving for something good to soak up the alcohol. So my mother-in-law went to the kitchen, whipped up some burgers for my brother-in-law to grill.
The burgers looked unassuming. Honestly, I thought it was going to be one of the “normal” burgers I listed above. Not that it mattered, I was drunk and hungry! And like I said, no such thing as a bad burger.
And then I took a bite. And it was life-changing. Juicy, flavorful, beefy and with a tinge of onion-flavor. It was awesome. It tasted like my mother-in-law had spent hours coming up with a flavorful spice mixture and picking out the perfect cut of beef. As any good wife who just ate two hamburgers does, I made Babyface quickly run upstairs and ask his Mom what she put into this heavenly patty.
Onion soup mix.
Yup, that was it. I was floored! And pretty much ever since I’ve been making garden onion burgers. I tried to ignore the fact that onion soup/dip mixes are chock full of nasty chemicals. Becuase, well, the burgers were worth it.
Then, a few weeks back, I was offered to test the new Dip Creations from Lay’s through the Foodbuzz Tastemaker Program. I quickly went to opt-out of the offer, assuming that the powdered mixed were nothing near real food—and no different from the mixes I’d been using—but my mind was changed when I saw this:
Not too shabby! As soon as these suckers showed up on my doorstep, I knew they were destined for an onion burger. Other than the onion, I also received a guacamole mix and ranch mix, both of which contain all natural ingredients and will surely end up in our bellies soon enough.
Back to the burgers. Want to know a tip for keeping your patties flat and similar-ly sized to the raw patty while cooking? Poke it!
The hole in the center of the burger helps keep the patty flat. Really, I have no idea why, but it works!
Garden Onion Burgers
- 1 pound ground beef
- 1 packet onion soup or dip mix
- 1 egg
- 1/3-1/2 cup bread crumbs
- Mix all ingredients in a large bowl. Form into four patties.
- Grill until desired doneness.
- Serve with desired toppings (we’re partial to cheddar, lettuce, red onions, tomato and avocado).
