confessions…

Posted on Dec 6, 2011 in Fun

1. In the past week, I’ve plowed through every single episode of Sister Wives. I find it fascinating. The thing that I think is the most fascinating? How totally normal it is. Everyone seems happy and the kids seem well-adjusted and loved. Still trying to figure out why that lifestyle is illegal, but admittedly, I know almost nothing about the history or culture.

2. I didn’t workout last week. Not once. Not at all. And I’m okay with that. It happens.

3. There are four pounds of asparagus in my fridge right now. Why on Earth would two people need four pounds of asparagus in December? Well, y’know, things.

4. You know how some people have road rage? Well, I have grocery store rage. I get irrationally angry when someone leaves their cart in the middle of the aisle, or stops to talk in a main pathway or walks painfully slow. I really need to go to anger management. It’s so not healthy.

5. I somehow managed to tear the living hell out of our bedsheet with my feet while sleeping. We woke up this morning and there was a giant tear on my side of the bed. Apparently I did some ridiculous thrashing?

  1. In BC, the supreme court just upheld the decision to keep bigamy and polygamy illegal last week.
The judge ruling cited his decision was based on the fact that women in polygamous relationships are at a higher risk of physical and psychological harm than monogamous women– the rates of domestic violence, abuse, and sexual abuse in polygamous marriage is higher.
Another reason is that apparently polygamy promotes early sexualization of girls, gender inequality, and leaves some boys without the opportunity for a relationship (since few men are getting multiple women).
Also there have been instances of teenage girls being essentially sold into marriage and trafficked across the border to become wives of FLDS men in the US.

I personally don’t know what my stance is on polygamy, but I just thought I’d share the recent court ruling with you.

    • Ooh, thanks so much! Fascinating. Honestly, my total knowledge of polygamy is from this show (which is obviously part propaganda and a single family example). I can definitely see all the points cited in the judges ruling.

  2. I get irrationally angry at the grocery store as well. I get all red-faced and I curse a lot. It really bothers me when people can’t move their carts to the side of the aisle or when they stop in the middle of the aisle to talk with someone they know. It makes me want to throw cans at them and tell them how horrible they are.

    • It at least makes me feel better than I’m not alone in my rage.

      • You are DEFINITELY not alone. People stopping in the middle of the aisle. People walking down the middle of the parking lot! Conversations blocking aisles, milk, checkouts. Man, I wish that I didn’t need to go to the store right now. Maybe I should wait a bit? ;)

  3. AH! I have grocery store rage, too! It’s a terrible thing. I hate confortation so as I pass the people that are “mis-behaving,” I very loudly say “MAN, I WISH PEOPLE WOULDN’T STOP IN THE MIDDLE OF THE ISLE – BROOKSHIRE’S ISN’T A PLACE FOR A FAMILY REUNION, IT’S TO SHOP FOR GROCERIES” instead of going directly up to them. lol I’m sure they could careless, but it really makes me feel good that I’m letting my frustration out and not letting it boil up insude! I haven’t had anyone punch me in the face yet so I’m gonna keep on keepin on!

  4. Ive never heard of this Sister Wives things – I will definitely need to check it out!!

  5. Oh, man, I *love* Sister Wives. I’m a few episodes behind, but I’ve been keeping up with any gossip news about what happens in the family, so I’m not technically behind on what’s happening. I, personally, have no problem with polygamy, as long as the participants getting married give their consent and in the case of Sister Wives, that is obviously the case. And I love the “it takes a village” aspect of the child-rearing.

  6. I don’t think I get grocery store rage so much as I get TARGET rage. Just this past weekend I was trying to manuever down a main aisle when the person in front of me just STOPPED right in the middle of the floor and started playing with their cell phone. And me, being such a jerk, I shoved my way past muttering something along the lines of, “People can be SO inconsiderate”. Ugh, it’s awful. I totally understand how you feel!

And I devoured Sister Wives this season. I’m enraptured by the whole concept of polygamy and what I’m interested in most is the dynamics of the bedroom (the one thing they refuse to talk about). You can’t help but be curious about it. And I can admit that I totally am! As a whole, I think the family is great and I love the BFF thing between Meri and Robin. When Robin offered to be a surrogate for Meri in the final episode, I BAWLED.

  7. Are you going to make asparagus pickles??! That would be awesome. :)

  8. If you like Sister Wives, you should try reading “Escape” by Carolyn Jessop. It presents polygamy from the point of view of a woman who was basically forced into the lifestyle. It’s really very interesting and almost infuriating at times. It was kind of a long book, but I ended up reading it in about 2 sittings.

  9. I love love love asparagus. I could eat it everyday. I hate when it’s not in season, I’ve tried eating the jar stuff but it’s hardly even the same thing.

I get grocery shopping rage too but I’m pretty good at bottling it up. I can’t stand it when someone blocked the aisle with their trolley or when someone take forever trying to pick something out. Or when I’ve placed my groceries on the conveyor belt how I want them packed and the register person messes it all up.
