what i ate wednesday: back in the habit

Posted on Mar 28, 2012 in Food

My eating while on vacation was, well, vacation-y. I’m a big believer that vacation should be decadent and luxurious and we successfully checked each of those boxes off for every meal we had. We had dessert everyday (more than once a day), we drank a lot of fruity, sugary drinks and we had our fair share of creamy, butter-laden dishes. And it was fantastic. I had crab cake eggs benedict (!). And an entire meal made of just Corona, tortilla chips, queso and guacamole. And no less than five slices of Key lime pie. And at least twelve hundred of these. And I don’t take back a single bite.

Have I mentioned that I love eating?

But, as with all things, that kind of eating had to come to an end. It’s time to get back to the real world. And in the real world, people don’t drink mimosas before breakfast.

Although maybe we should start, it’d make me a much more agreeable co-worker.

So this WIAW is back to the standard. Back to a world without Hollandaise sauce and champagne. It feels good to be back to normal, but I definitely have a bit of a vacation hangover. Especially from the sugar. We definitely rode the sugar train the whole trip, and it’s hard to get my body to agree that we need to step back our sugar intake. My head has been pounding all week and I know it’s a combo of dehydration (alcohol is not hydrating, yo) and sugar withdrawal.

Breakfast

Fage with Cherry while I was making a grocery list for the week. We actually brought quite a bit of food back with us from the trip—one of the bonuses of driving—but we did need to pick up a few staples.

And then a mini Kind bar as we headed out to the grocery store. I LOVE these bars. I’m normally not an energy bar fan, because I have texture/taste issues, but these are more like they just formed trail mix into a bar. Delicious! And I love the mini size. Perfect for snacking.

Lunch

Babyface was craving pizza when we got back from shopping, so I pulled us together some individual flat bread pizzas. Mine was a Flatout Wrap, marinara sauce, some fresh basil leaves and a sprinkle of mozzarella. Delicious! And only 170 calories for the whole pizza. It won’t ever replace my beloved delivery Aver’s, but it satisfies a craving.

On the side, I had a few carrots and cauliflower with this Greek yogurt dip we found while in Florida. It’s so nice to see healthier versions of classics in grocery stores. This stuff was great!

For lunch dessert, I had a Coconut Patty. Gosh, I love these. They are like more delicious Mounds.

Afternoon Snack

Dug in a citrus-y snack after lunch. Blood Orange Chobani and half of a juicy, fresh Florida grapefruit. Yum!

I also made some energy bites for the week, and I of course, had to taste test. Still delicious.

Dinner

We went a little crazypants with the debit card while on vacation, so this week has been deemed “Pantry Dinner” week. We have a ton of staples in our pantry and deep freezer and it’s time to save some cash and use ‘em up. Pulled some spaghetti and sauce out of the pantry and a pound of beef from the freezer and called it dinner. We buy beef in bulk so we always have some local, humanely-raised options waiting for us. On the side, I made a small salad and we had a couple of garlic toasts.

And of course, another Coconut Patty.

Evening Snack

Got a little munchy while watching Mad Men (we are only a few episodes into the first season, no spoilers, please!) and made some air-popped popcorn. I love popcorn with lots of salt and butter, but I’m trying to wean myself off of that and learn to like it naked. I’m getting there.

The Numbers

Yup, I’m back to tracking. Would you believe it if I told you I actually kinda missed it? I guess I crave order, sometimes.

What’s the best thing you ate yesterday?

Spaghetti. It’s always been one of my favorite meals and always will be.

  1. Welcome back to the midwest! I spritz Bragg’s liquid aminos and sprinkle nutritional yeast on my popcorn so that it tastes salty and cheesy. Much better and healthier than salt and butter and oh-so satisfying! Plus, Science Daily just said popcorn may be the best snack ever ;) http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2012/03/120325173008.htm

    • You know, I’ve been meaning to try liquid aminos. What does it taste like? I always imagine it tastes like soy sauce, which I do not like at all. Yuck!

  2. I love your pizza idea…it looks delicious! My favorite food yesterday was pad thai but I think that was because I went to lunch with my Auntie…food with people you care about is at least 10 times better.

    • You are totally right. I think food always tastes better when the company is good. :)

  3. Your pizza looks so good and so does your pantry dinner!

I did WIAW too! Check it out on my blog at Hungry Delights
    xo Emilie

    • Yum! Looks like a delicious day of eats, Emilie!

  4. The best thing I ate yesterday was a new type of Australian-style yogurt made by the Dreaming Cow company. It was their maple ginger flavor. All of their yogurts are cream on top style, so it was super rich and super delicious!

    • Oh gosh! That sounds delicious. Where’d you find it?

  5. I could eat an entire meal of Corona, guac and chips any day. Or just a big bowl of guac- I’m not picky!
I make flat-out pizzas quite often too- you’re right, they’re not “the same” as real pizza, but they get the job done.
I’m totally addicted to popcorn. I’ve had to wean myself off of it. Not that it’s bad for you- but I was eating it every night before bed, and was always going to bed with a full tummy (not a great feeling). I love it out of the air popper with just a little smoked salt and real butter.
Best thing I ate yesterday? Tacos. Hands down. Probably the best thing I’ve eaten all week!

    • I think you and I need to become besties. Popcorn eating, Corona drinking, besties.

  6. “And in the real world, people don’t drink mimosas before breakfast.”

No, but even in the real world, we SHOULD drink mimosas AS breakfast.

    • I know, right? They are good. And healthy! Vitamin C, people!

  7. Looks like it was a yummy day! The best thing I ate yesterday was the coconut-lime chicken that my friend made for dinner. :)

    • Oooh! Coconut-lime chicken? That sounds like an awesome idea!

  8. Welcome back! We’re trying to focus more on eating the food in our pantry and freezer instead of going to the store all the time.

    • It’s hard, because I have so many fun new ideas that require new ingredients, but it’s so much cheaper to be pantry-user.

  9. Loooooove Mad Men!!! What do you think so far?

    • It’s really, really good! Some of it hits a little too close to home because I work in marketing/advertising and some things are still exactly the same, but everything else is awesome!

  10. That pizza looks delicious!!! YUM!

    • It was pretty good! Highly recommend Flatout wraps for pizzas. :)

  11. Cassie, Thanks for this post. I am beginning to track calories and am wondering about the format you use. It looks really great. I like the goals for fats, protein, etc. and would like to do something like that. Would you be able to share how you track?

    • I use MyFitnessPal. The website is a little lackluster, but the iPad and iPhone apps are amazing (and that’s where those charts came from).

    • Thanks! I’ll give it a try.

  12. Welcome back!!!
I LOVE Mad Men! I started watching it through Netflix and caught up so I’m able to watch it live this season, you will love it!

  13. I love Kind Bars SO HARD :) I had one today! They are pricy but they are almost (almost!) worth it. My absolutely favorite bar! Hiiii, it’s been a while!
