all about the numbers challenge: the sequel
If you were with me last year around this time, you might remember a little self-imposed challenge I did here called the All About the Numbers Challenge. I was discouraged by the number on the scale, so I decided to turn the focus on some numbers that made me feel empowered. So for the 40 days leading up to the “big” American food holidays, I set out to focus on things like improving my plank time and eating a certain number of fruits and veggie servings instead of focusing on what the scale was saying.
The challenge was a big honkin’ success for me. I managed to hit all of my 10 goals, my focus was taken away from scale and I had some healthy momentum going into Thanksgiving. I truly believe that the challenge helped set me up to have a healthful holiday season. For the first time in as long as I can remember, I celebrated, ate and drank in moderation during Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s. I mean, heck, we even had a planking competition at my family Thanksgiving last year!
I would really like to repeat that empowerment and healthy momentum again this year. So, we’re gonna do it again, friends! It’s time for a sequel.
Thanksgiving Day is exactly 50 days from today (can you believe it?). Last year I did a 40 day challenge, but I’m starting a bit early because I need this challenge now. My motivation to be healthy has been seriously lacking as of late, and a little bit of a jumpstart (in the form of this challenge) is exactly what I need. Plus, Babyface’s family is coming in next week, and when the Johnston clan is together, the Johnston clan can drink and eat with the best of them, so it’s good to have a challenge to motivate me to make good, healthy choices (while still enjoying myself, obviously).
As far as the number-y goals go, the idea is still the same—focusing on the “good” numbers in my life—but some of the goals are changing from last year. Ready, Freddy? Here’s the plan:
And for those of you that would prefer not to read it in obnoxiously-colored graphic form, here’s the good ole text-based list:
- Log 2000 fitness minutes.
- Walk or run 100 miles.
- D0 a plank-a-day for 50 days.
- Eat 250 servings of fruits and veggies.
- Eat 75 meatless meals.
- Drink 500 (eight-ounce) glasses of water.
- Go 25 days without eating any added sugar.
- Complete 20 random acts of kindness.
- Go 50 days without stepping on the scale.
And just like last year, I’m going to give myself a big, juicy reward if I check off all nine goals. Normally I like to keep my goal rewards pretty small—a new shirt here or a new bottle of nail polish—but since this challenge has so many different aspects in so many different areas of my life, I figured a success deserved a hefty prize. So if I successfully hit all nine of my goals, I’m going to give myself a $200 shopping spree at Target. And that $200 is not to be spent on boring necessity stuff like food, toilet paper or dish soap. I’m talking full-on $200 splurge! Two-hundred buckaroos worth of sparkly nail polish, gaudy jewelry and throw pillows. Woohoo!
And it’s all or nothing, friends, so if I miss just one goal by a bit, no Target spree for me. And dude, I want that shopping spree so it’s on like Donkey Kong.
And just because everything is more fun when it’s wrapped up in a nicely-designed chart, I put that five years of design school to use and whipped up a chart for easy check-off-ery.
I’ve hung the chart on the small corkboard right next to our back door. I want to make sure I see it each and every day. It’s there as a constant reminder that I’m working on a challenge, and I need to get to gettin’!
