fiery eggnog martini
When my family got together last weekend to celebrate Christmas, one of my sisters suggested that we hold a cocktail hour after the kids all went to bed one evening. This might not seem out-of-character for some families, but we’re a bunch of beer drinkers (with the occasional bottle of wine thrown in). Cocktails aren’t really our thing. But we all thought it’d be a fun challenge to try to come up with some festive cocktails.
My sister and brother-in-law flew a bottle of local gin in from Oregon and made us crisp and clean gin and tonics (yum!). My other sister mixed us up these boozy, chocolately martinis that tasted like a very over-21 version of chocolate milk. My Dad whipped up a bottle of cranberry-infused vodka.
And I went all predictable-like and made an eggnog martini.
It was an all-around hit. Seconds were requested, which, in my book, means a recipe is a definite success. The mixture is simple—just four ingredients—but the resulting flavor is complex, warm, cozy and perfectly Christmas. You should head out now to the liquor store before it closes and pick up the ingredients—you won’t regret it.
Since I’m a skim milk drinker, sometimes I think that regular eggnog can be way too thick, creamy and sweet for my tastes—especially when combined with liquor. So instead of using the regular stuff, I searched out and found a low-fat version (Horizon makes a pricey, but delicious, organic one), which I think helps give this martini some drinkability that a lot of eggnog cocktails don’t have.
There are a lot of eggnog mixed drinks I love (amaretto + eggnog = amazing), but thanks to the complex, cinnamon flavor of this cocktail, I think it might be my favorite. It’s definitely the drink I’ll be sipping on while we do fondue by the fireplace this evening. Maybe I’ll even leave one out for Santa.
Regardless of what you celebrate, I hope you have a warm, cozy and love-filled evening tonight, my friends!
