my 2013 goals: less and more
First things first, I’ve got some fun news to share. If you follow me on Twitter, Instagram or Facebook, you’ve already seen photos of our newest addition to the Johnston family. Meet Sookie!
We adopted this playful little kitten from our local animal shelter this weekend, and we’re totally in love with her. We don’t know much about her because she was a stray, but we’re, of course, already calling her Kittyface. Her and Puppyface are slowly getting used to each other. We’ve evolved from barking and swatting to sleeping next to each other on the couch. Progress! I mean, they’re the exact same color, that must mean they’re meant to be bestest friends, don’t you think?
So this weekend I spent a lot of time hanging out on the couch surrounded by sleeping animals. Which gave me lots of time to admire the snow out our window and reflect on 2012 and contemplate what I want to accomplish in 2013
I’ve been going back and forth for a few weeks now about whether or not I wanted to write any 2013 goals. If you’ve been reading for a while, you know that I’m a pretty big fan of goal-setting. And every year, I give myself a list of very specific goals to hopefully achieve in the new year.
But this year, something is different. I already have so many of the concrete things I desire. I have a wonderful family. I have my health. I have financial security. I’m happy. And while I think even the happiest person has room for improvement in his or her life, I honestly had a really difficult time coming up with hard and fast goals that I wanted to achieve in the next 365 days. Life is pretty good right now.
And then, I saw this list going around on Facebook, and I knew I’d found the format for my 2013 “goals”. Sure, they aren’t your standard “I want to lose 20 pounds” kind of resolutions, but the simplicity spoke to me something fierce. I wasn’t looking for goals that I could chart on some printable spreadsheet. I wasn’t looking for goals that were inflexible. I was looking for a way to gently guide my upcoming year without the pressure of a “resolution”. And this idea of less and more really seemed to fit the bill. So I used the format to write my own set of guideposts for my 2013. I think if I just did a little less of the things on the left and a little more of the things on the right, 2013 will be an incredible year.

What a fantastic “resolutions” list. I like this because it applies so much more to the bigger picture-just having the best, healthiest day you can, every day.
I will have some specific resolutions for 2013 but will definitely be hanging this list up somewhere!
Thanks for sharing!
Love your goals for 2013! I hate making resolutions. So I started my list by patting myself on the back for a big triumph this year. I went gluten free in October after a year or more of digestive problems. It has made a huge difference. I have other small steps to take (all food related). Looking forward to a fabulous 2013!
This type of blog is why I come back and read all the time. I love it! I love your style and pace of life. And I love the way you challenge me! Thanks!
That is a pretty great list! That was actually the first time I’d ever saw it!
LOVE this list!! What a fabulous way to list resolutions. I hope you have a fantastic New Year!
This is my favorite 2013 post ever.
I love these goals. Each one is spot on!
What a wonderful way to approach the new year…I LOVE the less/more concept…the few that REALLY spoke to me…less hurrying, more enjoying (I’m always feeling like I’m rushing from one thing to the next and never really IN the moment), less loud, more quiet (I have come to love the quiet, very peaceful), less doubt, more confidence (I REALLY need to work on believing in myself more). Thank you again for a very inspirational blog…it’s one that I look forward to reading so very much. Happy New Year to you and your family.
Yes yes resolutions and such, but the only thing I could focus on is the most adorable new addition to your home/life! What an absolutely cute kitten!!! Very happy that you adopted a shelter cat-i think that’s a great way to start a New Year- a loving act of kindness. Happy New Year!
Holy crap. I know being envious isn’t a good thing, but I want everything in this post. It’s 80* already in Florida which means my snuggly winter cats are done snuggling.
