let’s talk top chef!
Alright, who here in this joint is a Top Chef fan? I’ve become recently obsessed with it, and I’ve just been dying to chat about the season with you guys. I don’t like to talk a whole lot about TV here, but Top Chef is a worthy exception, don’t you think? Getting inspired by the food the cheftestants make alone is reason enough to watch. I’ve gotten so many ideas for dishes right here on BTHR thanks to tricks, tips and creations I’ve seen on Top Chef.
Spoiler alert! If you watched this week’s episode and want to chat about, scroll on down. If you’re waiting to catch up on your DVR til the weekend, come back after you’ve seen the episode and chat with us. If you aren’t watching Top Chef, get on it, man!
I LOVE RESTAURANT WARS! I’ve read about pop-up restaurants before, and it is such a crazy concept to me. I can’t believe that this big empty room turns into a fully functioning upscale restaurant. I can’t even imagine the stress that comes with being in charge of all of that.
I think both of the services at the restaurants were actually pretty uneventful and the food seemed pretty evenly matched. I know it received mixed reviews, but Kristin’s take on a deconstructed macaroon sounded delicious! She had me at “buttercream”. I so wish TV had smell- and taste-o-vision so I could try these things.
But, of course, the biggest news was the drama and the elimination. I didn’t watch Josie or Stefan during their first seasons, but both of them totally sucked in this episode. I’ve actually really liked Stefan all season so far (even though everyone said he was a total jerk in his first season), but in this episode, why was he such a jerk to the judges during service? I understand he’s “not a waiter” but c’mon, that was your job! And you have to understand that no matter how much pressure you are under and how uncomfortable you are with your position that you treat the judges with respect and give them whatever they want! He got so lucky.
And Josie. Oh, Josie. She drives me insane! I think it was really classy of Kristin to take the fall for Josie’s failure, but even though that’s the case, I wish the judges would have seen through to Josie’s selfishness and sent her home. The judges ended up saying they sent Kristin home because the concept wasn’t thoughtout well, but the judges were the one that picked her concept! So I’m not entirely sure how that’s a valid argument. And Kristin is such an insane talent. Even when her dishes fell flat, you could tell that she was really thinking outside the norm, which was so refreshing. I’m sad to see her go!
Brooke is still my pick to win. She’s mega talented, she’s adventurous, but she’s also gracious, kind and a good team player. I would love, love, love to visit Brooke’s restaurant. Can’t wait for next week’s episode! It’s got to be Josie’s time to go. It’s GOT to be. Please, please let it be.
Who’s your pick to win? What dish from this week did you most want to try? Also, don’t forget to vote to Save a Chef. I’m voting to save Chef Kuniko!

I want Brooke to win. And I totally just agreed with you out loud about your POV with the judges and Kristen’s concept. They picked it!! Josie definitely should be going home!
I wonder if the judges have any idea what happens when they aren’t around. Like do producers tell them that Josie wasn’t being a team player? And if not, do they watch it when it airs and think, “Oh crap. We should have picked Josie!”?
Actually, this blog post answered my questions: http://www.bravotv.com/top-chef/season-10/blogs/tom-colicchio/restaurant-woes
Maybe she will be CJ and come back at the end! I am obsessed with Top Chef. I have gotten to meet two top chefs this year in Dallas and Chicago. It was awesome!
I was so mad that they sent Kristin home – I can’t believe the judges didn’t take into account all of the past weeks and how many times Kristin has won. I was thinking she would walk away with it all but now I’m pulling for Brooke or Josh. We <3 top chef and would love to have a finale top chef themed dinner party this year!
Also, did you all watch last season with Louisville chef, Edward Lee? He rocked!
I was devastated that Kristen lost, I really thought she could have won the whole thing. Now I’m all in for Brooke (with Sheldon as a second choice) and hoping that when Josie shows up at Last Chance Kitchen, Kristen really kicks her butt.
I also have Brooke picked to win! I love her point of view as a chef. I feel much better after reading Tom’s blog and I know as someone who has watched every season there is always an episode that as a viewer you want them to take the past weeks into account but they never do. It’s frustrating, but them’s the rules.
Just since no one has really mentioned him yet I want to propose Sheldon should win! I like Brooke as well and think that she has a great personality but Sheldon really showed his strengths in the past episode, and I like that he brings a different variety of food to the show.
Also, just read on his bio that he met his wife at Disneyworld. I mean, c’mon, what’s not to love?
I like Sheldon too. Mama Pea just went to Maui and dined in two of his spots and said they were great!
I was shocked with last night’s cut. I understand WHY – but honestly, they only saved Josie because the Bravo execs want to keep her around for the dramz. I LIKED Josie on her season. This one, not so much. I definitely think that Kuniko went home ahead of her time. But I’m sure that we will see Kristen again – just has to beat CJ (who I ALSO liked!) in Last Chance Kitchen!
Kristen should have spoken up about why the gelatin was not used for the bouillabaise…. she said they didn’t have time, but didn’t say they didn’t have time because Josie was too busy farting around and didn’t get it started in time! So frustrating.
Kristen was my pick to win, and she still could with Last Chance Kitchen, but other than her my other two votes are from Brooke or Sheldon.
I think things fell apart before they started, when Kristen decided to serve dishes a la minute, which Josie disagreed with from the beginning. You can’t do complicated, multi-component dishes like those a la minute. Josie has more line experience in a kitchen, and knew that.
Fairness, though, would’ve been to bounce both Kristen and Josie. Josie totally dropped the ball on execution on part of the soup, and caused a problem with her lackadaisical approach to timing, but Kristen failed at being an executive chef. She didn’t have a cohesive, workable plan for getting those complicated dishes out of the kitchen, and put no effort into talking with or working with the other chefs to making her bad plan any less awful. For her obvious talent in making food, she lacks in leadership and that’s what being EC in Restaurant Wars is testing.
I was so upset that they got rid of Kristin, but she could still win if she takes it all in Last Chance Kitchen, which I feel like she totally could. I can’t stand Josie, I didn’t like her the first time around, and was kind of disappointed when she came back this season. I could see Sheldon winning, but it would be really nice if a female could win Top Chef.
